Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker. The mechanism of action consists in inhibiting the entrance of calcium into the cell. Verapamil acts in smooth muscle, myocardial cells, and cells within the sino-atrial and atrioventricular nodes. The main actions of the calcium-channel blockers include dilation of coronary and peripheral arteries and arterioles.
